Aluminum Chloride

Versatile compound used in water treatment, pharmaceuticals, catalysts, and more.

Aluminum Chloride Water Treatment

Aluminum chloride is a chemical compound used in water treatment as a coagulant and flocculant to help remove impurities and clarify water by aiding in the precipitation of suspended particles.

Aluminum Chloride Uses

What is aluminum chloride used for?

  • Water treatment (coagulant)
  • Pharmaceuticals (antiperspirants, astringents)
  • Catalyst in chemical reactions
  • Dyeing and printing in the textile industry
  • Petrochemical industry (catalyst, chlorinating agent)
  • Chemical synthesis (reagent, precursor)
  • Antiseptics
  • Deodorants

Aluminum-Chloride

Aluminum Chloride Manufacturing Process

  1. Process aluminum (metal, hydroxide, or oxide).
  2. React with chlorine gas (Cl2) at high temps.
  3. Cool and collect as solid.
  4. Purify from impurities.
  5. Dry and package for distribution.

Aluminum Chloride in Water

Upon dissolving aluminum chloride in water, hydrolysis occurs, yielding aluminum hydroxide and hydrochloric acid. This reaction is expressed as:

AlCl3 + 3H2O → Al(OH)3 + 3HCl

The resultant aluminum hydroxide may polymerize, generating distinct species. These aid coagulation and enhance flocculation during water treatment, eliminating particles and impurities. Hydrolysis yields hydrochloric acid, impacting solution acidity. Aluminum chloride’s water treatment efficacy hinges on concentration, pH, and water chemistry.
