Different molecular weights of Polyethylene Oxide (PEO):

  • Physical Form: Low molecular weight PEO (below 1 million) can be liquids or waxy solids. Higher molecular weight PEO (above 5 million) is a white, free-flowing powder.
  • Solution Viscosity & Properties: Higher molecular weight PEO creates much thicker solutions at the same concentration. It also has better “stringiness” and gel-forming properties.
  • Gel Strength & Resistance: PEO with higher molecular weight (like 5 million) forms stronger gels. This makes it more resistant to being drawn into a syringe or injected, which is a key feature for abuse-deterrent drugs.
  • Flocculation Power: Higher molecular weight PEO is more effective at binding solid particles together in water, making it a better flocculant for mining and water treatment.

  • Friction Reduction: High molecular weight PEO is excellent at reducing drag in water. Just a tiny amount can lower friction in pipes by up to 50%.

How to Choose:

  • Below 1 million MW: Good for general thickening and coating applications.
  • 1-5 million MW: The most common range, used in papermaking and textiles.

  • Above 5 million MW: Best for demanding applications like mining flocculation, drag reduction, and controlled-release pharmaceuticals.

FAQ of Polyethylene Oxide (PEO)

Yes. High molecular weight PEO has very low oral toxicity and is generally considered safe. It does not easily enter the body through skin. FDA has approved it for food packaging and direct food additives .

Both have the same chemical structure. The main difference is molecular weight. PEG refers to lower molecular weights (below 100,000). PEO refers to higher molecular weights (above 100,000), including our ultra-high grades like 4-6 Million.

Higher molecular weights (4-8 Million) are most effective for flocculation. They bind fine particles together and improve settling in mining, paper, and wastewater applications. Typical use rate is only 10-50 ppm.
