Polyamine

Inorganic salt with various industrial, commercial, and scientific applications.

Calcium Chloride Desiccant

Calcium Chloride is a versatile chemical compound widely used for de-icing, dust control, water treatment, food preservation, and more.

What is Calcium Chloride?

Calcium Chloride is an inorganic salt with the chemical formula CaCl2. It is a white, crystalline solid with high solubility in water. Calcium Chloride is produced as a byproduct of the Solvay process or obtained from natural brine sources. Due to its hygroscopic nature, it can absorb and hold significant amounts of moisture from the atmosphere, making it useful as a desiccant. Calcium Chloride finds numerous industrial, commercial, and scientific applications, including de-icing roads and highways, dust control on unpaved roads, water treatment, food preservation, concrete setting accelerator, and as a drying agent in various chemical processes. It is valued for its ability to provide fast and effective solutions in a wide range of applications.

Calcium Chloride Uses

  • De-icing and Snow Removal: Calcium Chloride is widely used as a de-icing agent for roads, highways, and sidewalks during winter to prevent ice and snow buildup.

  • Dust Control: It is applied to unpaved roads, parking lots, and construction sites as a dust suppressant to control airborne dust particles.

  • Water Treatment: Calcium Chloride is used in water treatment processes to adjust water hardness, as well as to control pH levels and remove impurities.

  • Food Preservation: It is utilized as a food additive to enhance the firmness and shelf life of certain fruits and vegetables.

  • Concrete Accelerator: Calcium Chloride is added to concrete mixes to accelerate the setting and hardening process, especially in cold weather conditions.

  • Desiccant and Drying Agent: It is employed as a desiccant to absorb moisture and reduce humidity in various applications, such as in drying air and gases.

  • Oil and Gas Industry: Calcium Chloride is used in the oil and gas industry for well drilling, completion fluids, and cementing.

  • Pharmaceuticals: It finds application in the pharmaceutical industry as a source of calcium ions in medical treatments.

Calcium Chloride Structure

The structure of Calcium Chloride (CaCl2) consists of calcium cations (Ca2+) and chloride anions (Cl-) arranged in a crystal lattice. Each calcium cation is surrounded by six chloride anions, forming an octahedral coordination geometry. Likewise, each chloride anion is surrounded by six calcium cations, creating a symmetric and highly stable crystal structure.

Calcium Chloride is an ionic compound, and the strong electrostatic attraction between the positively charged calcium cations and negatively charged chloride anions holds the crystal lattice together. Due to this ionic nature, Calcium Chloride is highly soluble in water, leading to its widespread use in various aqueous solutions and applications.
