Why Does The United Arab Emirates Need Seawater Desalination?

Before formulating the solution, we had in-depth communication and understanding with the client. Due to the extremely arid climate and the lack of rivers and lakes in the United Arab Emirates, the scarcity of natural fresh water resources cannot meet the huge demands of its population growth and economic development.

Therefore, it can only rely on its energy and financial advantages to carry out large-scale seawater desalination, converting seawater into drinking water and domestic water. This has become the only feasible way to ensure the survival and development of the country.

Why is sodium chlorite chosen for seawater desalination instead of other disinfectants?

Sodium chlorite (used for the production of chlorine dioxide) is chosen for seawater desalination because it can efficiently and stably kill seawater microorganisms, does not produce carcinogenic by-products, causes less damage to reverse osmosis membranes, effectively extends the service life of core equipment, and its comprehensive benefits are far superior to traditional disinfectants such as chlorine gas.

How is 31% sodium chlorite used for seawater desalination?

Typical application process. Activation: At the dosing point, 31% sodium chlorite solution is mixed with an activator (usually hydrochloric acid (HCl) or sometimes hypochlorous acid) in a safe on-site generator or static mixer in an exact proportion, and a chemical reaction occurs, instantly generating a high-purity chlorine dioxide solution. 5 NaClO₂ + 4 HCl → 4 ClO₂ + 5 NaCl + 2 H₂O (This is a major reaction) Addition Pretreatment stage: The generated chlorine dioxide solution is directly added to the seawater intake or the pretreatment system (such as before the sand filter). Its main task is to continuously kill microorganisms in seawater, control the formation of biofilm, and oxidize and decompose some organic pollutants.

Note: Before entering the RO membrane, any residual oxidant (whether chlorine dioxide or residual chlorine) must be removed, as any oxidant can damage the RO membrane. This is usually achieved by adding a reducing agent, such as sodium bisulfite.
