How to Choose the Right Resin

  • For water softening → choose Strong Acid Cation Resin (001×7, Na form) . Removes calcium (Ca²⁺) and magnesium (Mg²⁺) hardness.

  • For demineralization (two‑bed system) → use Cation resin (H⁺ form) followed by Anion resin (OH⁻ form) .

  • For high‑purity water (mixed bed) → use Mixed Bed Resin for polishing after RO or EDI.

  • For wastewater / heavy metal removal → choose Macroporous resins (D001, D201, D301) for better fouling resistance.

  • For food / sugar / pharmaceutical applications → choose gel‑type resins with high exchange capacity and low extractables.

Ion Exchange Resins Types

FeatureCation Exchange ResinAnion Exchange Resin
What it removesPositive ions (calcium, magnesium, sodium, heavy metals)Negative ions (chloride, sulfate, nitrate, phosphate, silica)
Functional groupSulfonic acid (strong acid) or Carboxylic acid (weak acid)Quaternary ammonium (strong base) or Tertiary amine (weak base)
Typical ionic formSodium (Na⁺) for softening; Hydrogen (H⁺) for demineralizationChloride (Cl⁻) or Hydroxide (OH⁻) for demineralization
Common structure typesGel type (001×7, 001×8) and Macroporous (D001)Gel type (201×7) and Macroporous (D201, D301)
Typical applicationsWater softening, dealkalization, heavy metal removal, demineralization (first stage)Demineralization (second stage), nitrate/arsenic removal, wastewater polishing, sugar decolorization
pH rangeWorks across wide pH (0–14 for strong acid; 5–14 for weak acid)Strong base: 0–12; Weak base: 0–9 (no silica removal)
Regenerant chemicalSodium chloride (NaCl) for softening; hydrochloric acid (HCl) or sulfuric acid for demineralizationSodium chloride (NaCl) for Cl⁻ form; sodium hydroxide (NaOH) for OH⁻ form
Choose this type if you need…Hardness removal, softening, dealkalization, or pre‑treatment before anion resinRemoval of anions (chloride, sulfate, nitrate, silica) or complete demineralization
Combined useIn demineralization systems, always use cation first (H⁺ form) followed by anion (OH⁻ form) for complete salt removal. Mixed bed resin combines both.

What are Ion Exchange Resins Used for

  • Water Softening (Most Common): Used in residential, commercial, and industrial softeners. Cation resin (Na⁺ form) removes hardness ions (calcium and magnesium) and replaces them with sodium, preventing scale buildup in pipes and equipment.

  • Demineralization / Deionization (Water Purification): Used to produce high‑purity water for power plants, electronics manufacturing, and pharmaceutical production. Cation resin (H⁺ form) removes positive ions, then anion resin (OH⁻ form) removes negative ions, producing pure water.

  • Wastewater Treatment: Removes heavy metals (lead, copper, zinc, nickel) and other pollutants from industrial wastewater before discharge. Also used to remove nitrate, arsenic, and phosphate from drinking water and municipal wastewater.

  • Sugar & Food Processing: Used in sugar refineries to decolorize sugar syrups and remove impurities. Also applied in juice purification, gelatin refining, and wine stabilization to improve product quality.

  • High‑Purity & Ultra‑Pure Water Production: Used as a polishing step after RO (reverse osmosis) for semiconductor, laboratory, and pharmaceutical applications where extremely low conductivity is required.

FAQ of Ion Exchange Resins

Yes. Gel‑type cation resins can operate up to 120°C; macroporous cation resins up to 150°C. Anion resins are recommended for temperatures below 60°C (gel) and 80°C (macroporous). Higher temperatures may cause irreversible damage.

Yes, we can arrange third‑party inspection (e.g., SGS, BV) upon request. Our standard shipment includes our internal Certificate of Analysis (CoA), and we are happy to support external testing as part of your quality assurance process.

Only in a mixed‑bed system. For normal softening or demineralization, cation and anion resins must be in separate vessels. Mixed‑bed resins are specially pre‑mixed and designed for final polishing to achieve ultra‑high purity water.
