The importance and types of desiccant

What Are Desiccants?

Desiccants are hygroscopic materials that absorb moisture from air either by physical adsorption or by chemical reaction, and thus reduce the humidity in the headspace of sealed containers to keep products dry and stable.

They are often placed in packets made of kraft paper bags, or custom-shaped and sewn bags.

Desiccants are often used to create and maintain dry spaces, like the housing of an aerial camera, the inside of a shipping container or even a shoebox. In technical industries like aerospace, desiccant is used to protect electronics from corrosion and short circuiting, prevent sensor malfunctions, and stop fog or mold from forming on lenses. Some power generation plants use desiccants to dry gas streams and protect combustion engines from rust and volatile organic compounds (VoCs), such as siloxanes. On the other hand, residential or everyday applications of desiccant may include protecting stored photographs, books or albums.

Why Are Desiccants Important?

Moisture damage causes billions of dollars in damage to consumer goods per year and has been the inciting cause of plane wrecks, as well as the failure of electronics and optics equipment throughout various technical industries. As a result, desiccants protect everything from stored household items to NASA equipment.

Different Types of Desiccants

Desiccants are materials used to maintain dryness, whether preserving food products or preventing moisture damage to electronics or medications. Desiccants absorb the humidity and moisture in the air to maintain a moisture-free environment, which is essential to prevent damage, corrosion, bacteria and mold growth.

Many desiccants exist, including Silica Gel, Bentonite,Activated Clay, Molecular Sieve, activated aluminium oxide. There are multiple desiccant bag uses and items they can protect, which will determine the type of desiccant you use. Some desiccants also serve multiple purposes, such as eliminating odors or preventing contamination. Additionally, you can reuse your desiccants multiple times, which adds to their incredible versatility.

Silica Gel Desiccant

  • Silica gel is predominantly non-corrosive and non-toxic in nature. The most commonly used desiccant
  • Silica gel is often found in consumer products, such as clothing and electronics.
  • Silica gel does not function well in extreme heat and environments with a low H20 concentration.

Molecular Sieve Desiccant

  • Molecular Sieve is ideal for applications in extreme temperature settings. (40℃ to 230℃)
  • Molecular sieve will not as readily desorb moisture back into packaging when temperatures rise as will Silica Gel or Clay.

Montmorillonite Clay Desiccant

  • Its mostly used in storage applications and food.
  • It is highly effective within normal temperature and relative humidity ranges.

Desiccants are commonly used to keep products dry and stable. Dry desiccants can absorb moisture from air either by physical adsorption or by chemical reaction, and thus reduce the humidity in the headspace of sealed containers.
