The four major differences between PAC and PAM

PAC, whose full name is poly aluminum chloride, also called basic aluminum chloride or hydroxyl aluminum chloride, is an inorganic substance.

PAM, whose full name is polyacrylamide, has an average molecular weight ranging from tens of millions to more than tens of millions. It is an organic polymer compound.

Actually, the difference between PAC and PAM is mainly reflected in four aspects:

1.Color

PAC has many colors, including white, yellow and tan. PAM is only white. The brown color in PAC is because it is mixed with iron. The whiter the color, the less iron powder there is, and the water treatment industry doesn’t need to be so pure, so the most common color is tan.

2.Flocculation mechanism

PAC can flocculate because it will form a network structure after entering the water, which will pocket small solid particles together.

PAM can flocculate because it can break the electric balance between small particles after entering the water and let the solid particles in the wastewater gather together by themselves.

If technical terms are used, the flocculation mechanism of PAC is the mechanism of sweeping. The flocculation mechanism of PAM is electrical neutralization mechanism and bridging flocculation mechanism.

3. Method of application

Before PAC is used, the solid should be prepared into a solution with a concentration of 10-20%, and then poured into the pool. It is convenient and easy to use, and there is no special requirement. Before PAM is used, the solid should be prepared into a solution with a concentration of 0.1~0.3% with clean water, and then slowly poured into the pool. If it is poured quickly, the pipeline will be blocked, and it is easy to produce moths after storage and deployment.

Flocculate

PAM will degrade itself when it is fine, and the prepared solution will fail after being left unused for a period of time. Iron can’t be contacted during transportation and storage, because iron ions are the catalyst for PAM chemical degradation.

4. Dosage

The dosage of PAC is generally 200-300PPM, that is, 200-300mg is used per liter of wastewater on average. The dosage of PAM is generally 3-10PPM, that is, 3-10mg per liter of wastewater on average. PPM stands for parts per million, and 1PPM=0.001%, which is used at very low concentration. (For solutions, PPM generally refers to mass concentration.)
