How Much Do You Know About Reverse Osmosis (RO) Agents?

Reverse osmosis (RO) is a commonly used water treatment technology, which is used to remove dissolved salts, organic matter, particulate matter and microorganisms in water. Reverse osmosis agent is a chemical used to improve the performance and efficiency of reverse osmosis system. The following are some common reverse osmosis agents:

Scale inhibitor: Scale inhibitor can prevent hardness ions (such as calcium and magnesium) in water from scaling on the surface of reverse osmosis membrane. Common scale inhibitors are polyphosphate, polyacrylate and silicate.

Cleaning agent: Cleaning agent is used to remove pollutants on reverse osmosis membrane, such as calcium carbonate, silicate, organic matter and biofilm. Common cleaning agents include acid (such as hydrochloric acid and citric acid), alkali (such as sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide) and chelating agent (such as EDTA).

Bactericide: Bactericide is used to kill microorganisms in reverse osmosis system and prevent biological pollution. Common fungicides are chlorine, chloramine, chlorine dioxide and hydrogen peroxide.

Flocculant: Flocculant is used to improve the removal effect of suspended solids and organic matter in reverse osmosis water. Common flocculants are polyaluminum chloride, polymeric ferric sulfate and polyacrylamide.

PH regulator: pH regulator is used to adjust the pH value of reverse osmosis influent to avoid membrane degradation and scaling. Common pH regulators are sulfuric acid, sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate.

Oxidant: Oxidant is used to oxidize organic matter in water to improve its biodegradability. Common oxidants are hydrogen peroxide, ozone and chlorine.

Chelating agent: Chelating agent is used to remove heavy metal ions from water to avoid damage to reverse osmosis membrane. Common chelating agents are EDTA, DTPA and NTA.

In practical application, according to the water quality, operating conditions and equipment requirements of the reverse osmosis system, suitable chemicals can be selected for use.
